3 Quick Tips on Becoming a Great Retirement Plan Sponsor and how we can help!

*Tip # 1:  In a recent survey by Morningstar, the average mutual fund over the last 10 years has returned 9.8%. However, the average mutual fund investor has earned only 3.2%.

            The reason for this is simple: most investors chase returns and do not stay in a fund long enough to experience the gains. Last year’s “hot fund” will be this year’s “dog,” guaranteed. Most investors will look at their investment statements at year end and when unhappy with the results, they will follow last year’s big winner.

Here’s the tip, don’t chase returns.

Tip # 2:  Employee Education is 90% of the game.

            Most advisors that implement retirement plans are great at getting your plan started but after that, you could seldom see your advisor again. Quite frankly, this puts the burden of employee education on the employer's shoulders. The diffence between happy employees and those that are disatisfied with their retirement plan is not just their portfolio returns, it's ongoing investment education. Most advisors offer very little guidance in this vital area.

Tip # 3: Fees count

            Take the typical 401k plan. The average management fee is over 1.50% and if you are in an insurance platform which is almost always a variable annuity, add another 1.50% for “mortality and expense fees.” That could be 3.00% coming out of your pocket!

            Every dime of yours could disappear in fees in a flat or sideways market.
